I have been researching my family for many years now and there is a great uncle that has always been a mystery to me. His name was John Chalmers, born in Balclutha. He moved to Tolaga Bay in the 1880's and changed his name to Jack Nelson. I have a photo of his son George Waikari Nelson, sent to my mother about 1914. I did make contact with one of his daughters who told me that he married Elizabeth Wattie Goldsmith, but unfortunately I have lost that contact. I was delighted when I saw Elizabeth's name here and would be really pleased if one of her descendants would make contact with me at dawnlee@xtra.co.nz.

Just for my new babies sake I felt I should have her name put on this site as there cant be to many Manuels born here in Ireland, but my beautiful blue eyed, blonde haired Irish maori, Sarah Hikurangi Manuel was born on the 11th of april 2006 at St Lukes Hospital in Kilkenny, Ireland, and I know she is looking forward to going back to"home" some day.

I also would like to be able to update our family tree details on here if anybody can tell me who to or how to do it.
We had a very proud moment recently when our daughter Cerelia (15) who instigated my interest into my family background was awarded the top yr 11 Maori Academic award at Cambridge High School and also Top yr 11 Maori language student. Our Nan (Bub's Collier) turns 91 next weekend. Still very fit and able and looking after her own home. We are so proud of her!

Kia ora nga whanau katoa. Let me introduce my family to this kaupapa. My name is Ngawhira (Kuia) Manuel. We are the descendants of the second issues of this most indigenous (Spanish Native) man Manuel Jose. How is this so? (Manuel - Tapita Te Herekaipuke), (Neri - Mereaira Kaui), (Te Oti - Te Rina Pahau), (Ihaka - Hera Taukamo). Our lineage starts and ends here, a family of 7 of which 5 of us still living. Ihaka's first issue to the Manuel family tree. Hera (Taukamo - deceased). (Ihaka - Kiterangi Pipi Moeke), second issue to the Manuel family tree, 6 of which 4 are alive to this day. As we have never had any input placed into this whakapapa, guess it was time something needed to be done. Most of our upbringing was at Hiruharama (Ruatoria) and Kaharau, (Ruatoria). We like to make contact with our first cousins, family of Te Whio Parae Manuel our Dad's brother - Ereti Kirikino. Tena koutou katoa. Further information contact me (Ngawhira) 04-3842772.

Kia ora to all my whanau here in NZ and around the world. This is only the second time I have looked into the Manuel Jose website and the first time was a couple of years ago.I have started travelling overseas in the last couple of years and have now a few friends from South America who I plan to visit and consequently have been trying to teach me spanish and portuguese.I plan to visit spain one day and the birthplace of my ancestors.I have been looking at some old news articles and found a picture of Aunty Pam Hiroki and my late grandfather Spencer Haenga submitted by Maria Wilson nee Haenga.Thank you.My cousin Donna Maria Calaby my mums sisters daughter sent me a black and white copy of this picture a long time ago but I lost it so I'm glad to have a picture of them both now.If there are any Manuel Jose descendants here in Christchurch drop me a line at donny_z@hotmail.com.I've met a couple and have been told there are a few down here as well as some Haengas that are related.A big hello to all my long lost cousins.Hope you're all well.Still in Christchurch and loving it.Have'nt been home for a few years.Would love to head up the coast to Tiki tiki for a visit again.

Hola my family, thankyou for some response, from our spanish clan. Now I'm starting to be in touch with my dads family from gisbon, to whom I never really had the oppurtunity, however I met my aunt miriam (ditty) just after my mum passed away 1999,and not long after my dad took ill to which he passed away, 2003, but when I was younger and still residing in N.Z. I remembered uncle John, Auntie Olive, and Uncle George, may the men of that family be sadly missed and cherished for all eternity, but as far as I know my aunts were all still alive. If anyone has any info on the Nelson clan those who I mentioned I would really appreciate some feedback, and thankyou again for this wonderful website, gracias to you all Melva Nelson.

Tena Koutou e nga uri whanui o to tatou tipuna a, Manuel Jose
My Grandfather was Huatahi Manuel son of Te Oti,
son of Neri and Mereaira of the first issue. My grandfather married Te Ata Kura nee Houia they had one natural born son, my Uncle Rawiri, whos name I see as attached to my grandparents portion of the whakapapa however, my grandparents also had a legally adopted daughter, Kura, my mother (and named after my grandmother) who was raised from birth onwards, alongside a son (Tahi, named after my gradfather) who was whangai'd by my grandparents.
My question therefore is this, can anyone tell me how my mum, my sibs and myself and our respective families go about having our names added to those of our grandparents whakapapa ?
Kia Ora noa tatou

kia ora to all our whanau, especially back on the coast. well what a sad time this is with members of our whanau passing away. Its times like this when its hard been away from home, and its not just a hop skip and a jump to make it back to a tangi. I was so saddened to hear about uncle john pepere, my dads brother and then a couple of days later two of my dads first cousins uncle john and uncle Micheal man how heart breaking could this be. I know my my parents especially my dad will be waiting at heavens door with open arms.

Kia ora whanau out there my name is Moana Reedy mokopuna of Horiana (Manuel) Kirikiri who is daughter of Karaitiana Manuel. I lived in Brisbane for 13 years now and married a Reedy from Hicks Bay we have 3 children who are born and bred Queenslanders (unfortunitly) however all still good as they do know all about there home Gisborne, Tolaga Bay, Anaura Bay, Tikitiki, Ruatoria and of course Hicks Bay they have been home a number of times my eldest daughter had to do a school assignment just recently about her whakapapa so I have now taken it upon myself to teach as she is now old enough to find out about it all going back as far as Jose Manuel himself migrating from Spain. When she completed what she could do or fit on the biggest page that her teacher could give her it was still not enough room so we took her teacher and class to the website and showed them the website and they were amazed.

Kia Ora! My name is Tara and I am the eldest daughter of John Tangaere Yates, middle son of Ralph and Ane, who was a daughter of Mereapu. My fathers' details are missing from the whakapapa so I will clarify: Ane Tangiahua married Ralph Yates and had 3 sons; Rangi (Frank), John and Ariki (Riki or Reg). The sons then had 3,4 and 2 children respectively. In the whakapapa it has a Mereapu Hardacker as the daughter of Ane and Ralph which is incorrect. I hope this clears things up. Anyone wishing to contact me can do so at tara_yates@hotmail.com. Congrats on a terrific site.

I've put comments in but I forgot to copy in all I had said. Well just briefly. I'm Tania Wikotu. Daughter of John and Sylvia Wikotu, Grandaughter (Dad's side) of kokere (John) Wikotu AKA Wikotu Wikotu, Brother of Urupene (Rutene) Wikotu who's name I've seen in here. My dad left his whakapapa which I have found to be a great treasure. I can say with total confidence that I am a descendant of Kahungungu through my great grandmother, Tuhoe through my wikotu side and Hape...Please read my other entry for more.

To finalise my comments I have been able to go as far back as two canoes. Unfortunately I have still alot of research for dates in history etc. If you think you are interested in some of the information I have or can suggest further resources to assist my research into the history of whakapapa then please email me at wikotu@hotmail.com. Kiaora.

Kia ora Bob, my name is Rebecca Kiddle and I am the grand daughter of Walter Peachey. This is a fantastic site. I am currently in the UK studying but am going to travel to Spain and Portugal soon when my sister joins me here in May. We would like to visit places which are relevant to our whakapapa. I have found a couple of places on the site such as Valverde del Majano but if you had any other information about where we could go to get more information about Manual Jose over here in Europe or other possible places of relevance it would be good to visit we would really appreciate it. My email is becky.kiddle@gmail.com. Regards Rebecca
