Kia ora. My name is Steve and have just stumbled across this website. My father is trying to trace back our whanau heritage and have been told our koro is a descendant of Jose Manuel. My Koro was whangai into the Lewis whanau. My father lives in Waipawa and my Koro spent most of his life in Waipukurau. It is without doubt that my Koro has Spanish in his blood as he very much so had spanish features. We have the Jose Manuel Whakapapa hanging in my dad's whare. I will be informing my Dad and Nan of this website so he can make the necessary movements in finding out more about where my Koro was from and who his biological whanau is. My Koro's name is Peter Lewis. Sadly he is no longer with us. I have forgotten who his mother was. Kia ora

Kia ora, A friend of John's (my partner) sent this email to their friends in their office while we were over in Spain. The town of Valverde del Majano, near the city of Segovia, rolled outthe red carpet for them! The NZ Ambassador to Spain, Geoff Ward, andsome other members of the diplomatic staff, joined in the welcome.
From the story on the web site, I gather that the Spanish ancestry goesback to one Manuel Frutos Huerta who either emigrated from the locality 175 years ago, or was born there 175 years ago.
The story says both things! In the speech given by the Kaumatua, George Clark, the ancestor is referred to as "Manuel Jos", so there seem to be two different names as well...!Apparently he went out to South America as a whaler but eventually came to New Zealand where he settled and married and has some 16,000 descendants traceable back to him.
Wow!The ceremonies started in the Hotel Corregidor in Segovia and then continued in the main square (Plaza Mayor) of Valverde del Majano. Looking at a brief history of the place it only really dates back to the 12th century as a known location, although some pre-historic remains have been found near the river bed. In the 1850s, around the time when this ancestor would have left the village, the area was and continued to be very poor. The population in1910 was 1119.The Civil War from 1936 to 1939 did not spare Valverde, and some unpleasant events took place. The population continued to decline because the rural exodus of the 1950s and 1960s, but it stabilized around 600 in the 1980s and has obviously been rising since then, given that it now has an "industrial zone". From the various photos on the site it is clearly very rural and agricultural, and very friendly!

Hola la familia. My name is Clifton Heather. Son to Derna Heather Rangitukia. Grandson to Mei Fox-Clarke nee Hovell. She was a great grand daughter to Manuel Jose de Frutos. I would like to say how exciting it is about the recent visit to Valverde del Majano to meet our afar relatives. I have read the articles with great excitment and to see the photos of our relatives in Espana truly memorable. I know my mother is kicking herself for not being able to attend. Next time perhaps. I am very interested in obtaining the documentary that Diana Burns was an integrel part in making. This would make a lovely gift for my mother, one she would treasure. If someone has this information, I would most grateful in hearing from you. My email address is beparker@xtra.co.nz. Kia ora Panioras: Notes from Spain is an online community of people from all over the globe who share a passion for Spain. I have seen your great story on Spanish TV and decided to post it on our forum:http://www.notesfromspain.com/forums/showthread.php?p=30433En Nuevo Zelanda hay un grupo de maores (los indgenas de aquel pas) que tienen antepasados espaoles. Translation:In New Zealand, there is a group of Maoris the indigenous people of this country which has got some Spanish ancestry. They are the descendents of a man from Segovia, Manuel Jos, who arrived in New Zealand during the first half of the 19th century. Instead of colonizing the natives, he befriended them and he married five (!) of their women. Soon he became an integral part of this Maori tribe, the Ngati Porou. His descendants are so numerous they actually form a sub-tribe, which distinguishes itself from the other Ngati Porou because of their Spanish ancestry. In Maori culture, lineage and ancestry are very important issues. The descendants of Manuel Jos are very proud of their multi-ethnic identity and they even organize Spanish fiestas! They are known as Paniora, which means Spanish in the Maori language, and some of them are doing their utmost to salvage the Spanish part of their cultural heritage. At this moment, a delegation is visiting Spain. Saludos!

¿Podriais escribirme?. Dobliz1977@hotmail.com. ¡¡¡Hasta pronto!!!

My name is Miguel Gimnez, spaniard, and visited Aotearoa 15 years ago for six months. I am an agronomist and I was involved with some research projects in an experimental station in Bay of Islands. I had the opportunity to travel around and I remember that one day, probably in Te Araroa, somebody told me that he was a descendant of a spaniard called Manuel Jos. I recall this conversation very well because it really impressed me but unfortunately I didnt get much more details. Everytime I tell stories about my travel to your country I dont forget to mention that some maori people there share a spanish ancestor. Tonight I have seen the documentary, just by chance, zapping, and fifteen years later Ive known the whole story. Now, in your web page, Ive seen that finally you know a lot more about Manuel Jose, where he was born, what did his eyes see when he was young, from which land did he depart to land at the other side of the world. This message is just to congratulate you and wish you a fruitful and pleasant visit to Valverde.Yours sincerelyMiguel Gimnez

Bubs Collier (wife of the late Parekura (Sydney) Collier) has signed herself into a resthome. Nana is nearly 92 yrs old and has decided she is ready to be pampered and be lazy! We are fortunate in that Nana is still very capable and reasonably healthy but her eyesight is starting to let her down which makes her very nervous when she is home alone. If any of the family would like to make contact with her email me, my new email address is spdip@xtra.co.nz and I will email the details to you.

Kia ora koutou, I'm currently doing research for a book (fiction) about a Maori whanau that come from dual ancestry. I'm keen to talk to Maori who have managed to retain a cultural connection to, and are fiercely proud of both sides of their whakapapa, no matter how far away their ancestors may've come from. I'm of Ngapuhi descent (married to a Grace from Ngati Porou) and live in Paekakariki. My email is: briargs@gmail.comNga mihi, Briar Grace-Smith

I'm a great grandaughter of James and Julia Fitzgerald, which lived in a homestead in Anaura Bay in the late 1800's. They left for Te Aroha around 1907. My grandmother was Margaret Fitzgerald the youngest of their eight children. Apparrently the lockwood family now own the homestead. Would love to know more about the time they spent there.
